Amazon has had tremendous success over the years. Given its worldwide presence, very cheap shipping costs and sometimes failing to collect taxes from sellers on their market platform, their products are much less expensive than those of other business models. They have therefore, impacted retailers and other business models. The approach that they use is cost effective allowing them also to sell their merchandise at a reduced cost. Due to that the retailers and the business have to come up with strategies that will counter attack the Amazon model.
Amazon is an e-commerce platform that allows other seller to post on their platform for sale to the customers. This business model thus sends the message to other business models that they either have to adapt the Amazon model or risk of phasing out of the market. What the Amazon business model portends to other business models in the world is that they have to come up with approaches and models that will either be similar to Amazon or cost-effective than Amazon. Otherwise, they will not be able to meet amazons competitive pricing and customers will move to purchase products from Amazon.
I do not believe that this spells the end for local or regional players in favor of the massive presence that is operated from the USA. It will all depend on how the local and regional players respond to the strategies and the model that Amazon uses. Amazon prioritizes increase in revenue and conquering new markets. However, the regional players can prevent Amazon from entering into the market by either adopting their model or starting their e-commerce platforms that are as efficient as Amazon.
Local players have the advantage over Amazon due to customer proximity and specialization on the products if they also start e-commerce platforms. However, they may not be able due to lack of resources or the technical know-how. If they fail to put in place strategies or business model that is as cost effective as the ones that Amazon uses, they will be risking running out of business in favor of Amazon.
Amazon has emerged as a global player in the Technology industry competing favorably with Google, Samsung, and Apple among others. However, their primary service is the e-commerce platform which they are leading by market share. Their model has managed to take a market share from all other players who have not created a reliable and efficient online presence. While this does not spell an end to the local or regional players, those who fail to adopt or mitigate against Amazon might be facing their end.
