He was a puritan author that who came from West Riding of Yorkshire. His main reason for
moving was to escape prosecution from King James I of England. It therefore means that the
main reason why he moved out of the country to the colony was not to colonize the colony
but to escape prosecution from King James I of England. He was the signatory of the May
Flower Compact and was also selected to serve as the governor of the Plymouth Colony
intermittently for about 30 years between 1621 and 1657. He was a religious person that
aimed at reforming the Church of England from the catholic tendencies. However, King
James I of England was elected and completely fought to restore the Church of England by
eliminating any attempt to reform the church movements. He dealt harshly with the critics of
the church and that is how William Bradford found himself liable for persecution and that is
what made him leave his country and move to the colony where he had his fortunes and was
chosen as the governor, a position that made him very influential in the colony meaning that
leaving the country was a blessing in disguise (Bradford, 2009).
Unlike William Bradford, Anne Bradstreet was the first writer in the England's North
American colonies to be published. She was noticed because of the love that she had for
poetry that not only made her an entertainer of the people but also made her to be very
influential in the society. Both William Bradford and Anne Bradstreet were from wealthy
families. However, unlike William Bradford, Anne Bradstreet did not become a governor in
the colony. She stuck to her poetry that made her to be noticed in the area where she was
living. William Bradford represents the role that men played in the colonies whereas Anne
Bradstreet is a representation of the works that the women did in the society and the lives of
the writers in the society. Her poetry had powerful themes that affected the lives of the
people including some lessons to the women and it was intended for a variety of audiences as
a way of ensuring that the intended audience had received the message that she had intended
for them. Unlike William Bradford, Anne Bradstreet did not leave in order to avoid
prosecution ("To My Dear and Loving Husband," n.d.).
John Smith was an explorer, a soldier and a colonial governor just like William Bradford. She
was also an author and he played a very important role in the development of the colony at
Jamestown Virginia. His passion in exploration made it easier for him to develop the map of
the coast of new England. Unlike the two above, John Smith taught the fellow settlers on how
to firm and work, which helped them in making more money as they were in the colony.
Colonies required money to run hence farming and could help the leadership in making more
money that could help the colony to run smoothly for the benefit of the society in general
