The high incarceration rate in America is the highest, and this means that many
people pass through this system. The problem with the system though is that most often after
coming back from jail the society somehow finds it difficult to accept you. These kinds of
societal denial have an influence to their socioeconomic lifestyles. Every so often, the inmates
are rejected for job applications, which may lead them to apply for low-level jobs or worse, lead
them back to the streets.
A non-profit organization has proposed to house these inmates for a six months period
while they work to earn some stipend. The six months period is a sufficient time to learn a few
skills necessary for job employment. For sustainability the inmates will be required to work on
their to pay for the maintenance of the resources. However, this might not be possible because of
the difficulty’s inmates go through to find jobs.
Mission and Visions
Following the hardships that the inmates have gone through while in prison and the way
time has passed since they were out, they will need sometime to readjust. The mission of the
organization is to protect the inmates from social judgement and offer them with the necessary
tools that will help them in finding jobs and be independent.
The vision outlines a cost-effect plan intended to give an overview of how the inmates
should be rehabilitated back into the society. It sets a focus in offering solutions on how the
government can solve the issue of inmates’ life after prison. This is through training on special
skills and new techniques that will help them as they seek for their sustainability.
The mission and vision can only be achieved through commitment and determination in
its implementation.
Business goals
The main business goal of the organization is to find a way to get these inmates back to their
feet. Inmates are known to suffer from stigmatization and discrimination, as they are seen as
outcasts and dangerous to the society. These challenges can affect the psychological perspective
of the individual hence leading to catastrophic results. The other expected to be achieved
include;
1. To provide a cost-effective plan for the government to adopt for housing the inmates that
they are trying to incorporate back in the society.
2. To provide a safe place for the inmates to recoup as they find how to sustain themselves after
the six months. This safe place will release some pressure of their shoulders and with the
help of our counselors they can recover and become more productive.
Core values
In their endeavors to offer the inmates with the best skills, there are core values that will
act as a pathway in designing the program. The client being the inmates, efforts made are
therefore necessary to be in their best interest. The suggested core values for service delivery
therefore are;
i) Dependability
With the program aiming at inmate’s self-sustainability, dependability offers a major
step in seeing to the effect of our mission. This is achievable through instilling the virtue of
trustworthiness and reliability. Dependability as a core value ensures social and economic
growth to the inmate, which will mean acceptance to the society.
ii) Open-Mindedness
This is to open the thinking scope of the inmates. As time pass, new technological ideas are
introduced. These technologies are the essential aspect of our lives today, and by introducing
these new ideas to the inmates who may not know how technology works, we build their
thinking capacity.
iii) Stigmatization
Among the challenge’s inmates face after being released is stigmatization. Most of the time
the stigma starts within the family and spread to the larger community. This has an influence on
the inmates as stigmatization may cause depression and other health issues. Therefor it is with
best interest that we train these inmates on how to deal with societal stigma.
iv) Commitment/Consistency
This is to ensure that there is a commitment to ensuring that these inmates are well
rehabilitated and an assessment made that they are ready to join the rest of the society. the time
period is a short one therefore our consistency and commitment will ensure the realization of our
goals.
v) Safe place
The care and protection of the inmates is top priority. Therefore, the interest of the inmate
should be at heart. The program provides a safe place where inmates can interact freely and share
idea as they continue their rehabilitation process. This also protects the prove the harsh
judgments by the society.
Key to success
The key to success involves policies that are well defined and easy to implement. The
strategic approach and the cost-effectiveness of the project will involve finding ways to be able
to sustain the specified number of inmates for the duration of their stay. Therefore, the following
are the steps taken to ensure this success.
i) Strategic Alliances.
A simple plan can be devised where inmates work as they are housed. This can be
achieved through partnerships with other organizations that offer employment. This way the
inmates get some income and a percentage is given back into the project.
i) Psycho-social Counselling
Community counselors will be contracted to help in psychosocial counselling. Their main
objective is to stabilize the psychosocial aspect of these individuals. By organizing social
counselling groups, the inmates might share their fears and find ways to fight these fears.
ii) Four elements of Incorporating Ex-convicts back to society
Through proper assessment and continuous psychoanalysis, a decision can be made on the
approaches to use when dealing with the inmates. Data collected are analyzed and the progress of
every inmate with relation to the approach used is recorded. This is important for the
stakeholders in policymaking.
iii) Workshops and Training programs
The institution in conjunction with other partners will sponsor workshops and training
programs focused at giving the inmates skills and ideas of how to be self-dependent. The
workshops are crucial as from there they can know what field to specialize.
Summary
For decades, the Federal state has struggled with the population of inmates in their
prisons. Problems follow through even after the inmates have served their sentences. One of the
challenges is that the inmates find it hard getting back into the society because of stigmatization,
which leads to unemployment for them. This is a proposal to support the inmates to get back to
their feet by offering them with a safe place to stay and work after being released from the justice
system. This is an initiative by non-profit organization 501 c 3, located at halfway house in East
St Louis Illinois. Address 1126 Cleveland Ave East St Louis II 62201. The house is cost
effective since it will act as both a residential place and workplace.
