Cases of teenage pregnancy are on the rise. Teenage pregnancies refer to the pregnancies
of individuals who are between thirteen and nineteen years (Akella, 2018; Karai et al., 2018) .
What this means is those teenage pregnancies typically during the adolescent age. Since the
adolescence stage is the period in which people transit from childhood to adulthood many girls
generally are not ready to carry the pregnancies as most are under their parents. The situation is
further complicated since in most cases it is the teenage boys that are typically responsible for
the pregnancies. This write-up is meant to create awareness to the teenagers so that they take
proactive measures in preventing themselves from the teenage pregnancies. Some of the primary
causes of adolescent pregnancy are ignorance, sexual abuse, and peer pressure.
According to Karai et al. (2018), ignorance is one of the causes of teenage pregnancies.
Most teenagers are ignorant of the fact that if they have unprotected sex at certain times, then it
might lead to pregnancy. They do not have much information about the contraceptives that are
available. Most thus get involved in unprotected sexual intercourse which leads to pregnancies.
Sexual abuse is another leading cause of teenage pregnancy. Discussing sexual matters
with parents is regarded as a taboo in many societies (Akella, 2018). Some people take
advantage of this fact to sexually abuse teenagers knowing that the abused teenager will not
report the individuals. This kind of sexual abuse has typically resulted in teenage pregnancies.
Akella (2018); Ponsford et al. (2018), infer that peer pressure is another leading cause of
teenage pregnancy. As we had mentioned earlier, the adolescence stage is the transition stage
between childhood and adulthood. During this period there are lots of changes that happen to the
bodies of the teenagers. The teenagers start being attracted to the opposite sex, and that is how

many of them begin engaging in the premarital sex. Teenagers in a given peer will easily
influence each other to get involved in sexual escapades which will result in teenage
From the above discourse, it is apparent that teenage pregnancy is a problem that needs to
be addressed. The teenagers need to be enlightened about the dangers of engaging in premarital
and unprotected sex. There is also need to create awareness on sexual abuse so that the teenagers
can report the sexual offenders who take advantage of them. The teenagers also need to be
guided and mentored so that they do not blindly follow their peers. When the above is
implemented, then the teenage pregnancies will be managed.
