I was travelling in a bus on one bright morning going to a nearby town. Our towns are metropolitan meaning that they are composed of people from diverse cultures that interact within the society. He was dressed in animal skin something that I found so awkward since I had never seen it before. Before that, I had heard that some members of a given culture were worn animals skins as clothing. It I gazed at him in amazement, but he was not amused by my behaviour then suddenly a conflict ensued that made him hurl insults at me. I was also offended by the verbal abuse, but I kept my cool as a way of avoiding trouble. However, he couldn’t stop to the extent that the passersby had to intervene to solve the situation. I then understood that gazing at a person is an offence in some of the cultures in the society which was a good lesson to me as an individual. We then made up and became best of friends. Being a person who likes adventure, I curiously asked him to give me information on how I could get it and dress in it as well. I was then given my piece of the garment. It was surprising that I felt so comfortable and warm in it. He also took me to his home where I had a taste of their culture which includes the music, food, and the other cultural activities that identify them in the society. The most surprising thing was the kind of attention that I was able to attract in the whole urban centre. Since that day, I learnt to respect the culture of the other people no matter how awkward it may seem. It may look absurd to the others, but to the owners to the culture, it is a good way of identifying themselves in the society. The incident showed me clearly that not all the people in society can understand the culture of the other people in society. The people, therefore, need to learn the cultures of the people that they live within the society with cohesion and concerning each other. I, therefore, understood that some of the behaviours that we practice however small they look affect the other people in society. There is always a misunderstanding between the cultures which requires various people in society to study it to the benefit of the society in general. There are some commonalities between the cultures that play an important role in ensuring that there is cohesion among the people in society to the benefit of the people in the society. Some of the commonalities that I identified is the ingredients that are used in making the foods as well as the materials that are used in making clothing.
The norms practised in my culture compared to the culture of my friend is the fact that both cultures have various religious practices that they are associated with. The experience relates to what we have learnt in class on the importance of culture and cohesion among the people and how it affects the lives of the people in the society. The lessons learnt in the classes have taught us various ways in which the people in the society may ensure peace among the people in society. In conclusion, cultures are important in the lives of people because they give a sense of belonging to a given group of people in society. Some people don’t like associating with their cultures due to their reasons, in such a case it is important to respect their choices.
