Each professional group has a code of ethics which every individual is expected to be
familiar with. These will determine how one is supposed to conduct himself or herself and will
dictate his or her relationships within and without the profession as well as his or her
responsibilities. The code of ethics will equally set a code of behavior among the professionals.
There are a lot of lessons that we are able to pick from the code of ethics such as helping us to
identify the ethical dilemmas of a particular profession. Studying the code of ethics is necessary
because it can enable people to set limits and boundaries and avoid the misuse of their freedom.
History clearly indicates the challenge that rises when a code of ethics is not properly
taken care of. The example of the Nazi Medicine which targeted a particular group of individuals
arose from a lack of understanding by the Nazis. The Tuskegee Syphilis Studies is another
illustration of why people need to fully understand the essence of a code of ethics. The research
conducted on Tearoom Trade is a serious embarrassment in anthropology which revealed dirty
scenes of men who should have maintained healthy boundaries.
There are several barriers to ethical problems. Economics is one of the barriers which
limits ethical practices. Another barrier is Institutional racism which should be tackled
appropriately. Sexism and homophobia is another barrier to ethical practices. While conducting
this research, one should be careful to consider the human participants who must be approved
properly. The participants should be informed through a consent form to assure them of
protection. Several issues such as confidentiality, sensitive research topics, Paying Informants,
the one who will fund the research and how other people will view the research should be fully
looked into before embarking on a research of this nature. Strategies for strengthening Ethical
practices should be put in place.
