An explication is an extended discussion of one particular theme issue or rhetorical mode in a text. (One example of a rhetorical mode isnarration where the author tells a story as a means of drawing the audience into the situation. Narration can be used to make readers connect with the backstory of a particular situation before or after the author presents his or her thesis for example.) Explications arepersuasive(i.e. you need a thesis statement that articulates a specific debatable claim) and are intended to argue your particular interpretation of a text within the framework of your selected theme issue or rhetorical mode. For example if you are writing an explication that involves narration you would argue that the mode of narration plays a specific role in the author’s argument or the text’s affect on the reader. You will need to provide quoted or paraphrased support for your discussion points within this essay; please be sure to cite your sources in APA format with in-text citations and Reference page entries.
