REPORT ON PROPOSING A CAMPAIN RAISING AWARENESS ON THE IMPORTANCE OF MENTAL
2) TERMS OF REFERENCE (indicate the scope and purpose of the report)
Organising a campaign for two days as requested by Ms Stephanie Low to raise awareness for
students in ITE College East. The Student Council Board would provide information about
student understanding mental health awareness and submit a formal report to him. The main
agenda of the program will be to assess the level of knowledge of the existence of mental health
issues in the school community. This will form a better understanding upon the institution to try
and develop programs geared towards helping individuals with similar issues.
3) PROCEDURE (3 types)
I) The Student Council Board will be creating a group interview with students from different
courses. Doing so will enable the committee to have a wider perspective of the entire
institution. Sampling students to take part in the research from various institutions will
increase the randomness of the entire sample and therefore increase its validity and
reliability. The committee would be asking similar questions to the students in order to get a
more accurate result. The response will be able to help the committee gather information to
plan a good campaign in ITE College East.
II) They will do an online survey, sending questions out to students in every courses about their
knowledge of mental health. The survey would be given out to students to gather
information. The processing the students will first of all include an online advertisement in
the school portal. The portal will declare the dates within which the exercise will occur.
Therefore, intending students will be aware of what dates they should expect the
questionnaire to be available on the site. This will certainly increase the number of students
that will be available for participation in the questionnaire.
The Committee would also be consulting an ECG counsellor in order to let us know more
information on mental health wellness. They would then be able to create a campaign that
can provide much more depth into such issues. In so doing, the agenda of the campaign will
be achieved and the process can be considered to be successful.
I) The online survey conducted by the lecturers have been able to gather 8000 Responses and
around 75% of the students were aware of the effects of mental health, however they had
no idea how to help them. This shows that a great percentage of the school students can
identify an individual with a mental health problem. However, they are incapacitated to act
because they do not have the right knowledge on what actions to take in the even that they
are faced by such circumstances. 15% of the students only know how to support their
friends the right way when they are suffering from mental health issues. Some students
provided a number of actions they would take if they encountered a students with a mental
health issue. For instance, a common response from such individuals was that they would
refer their students to the school’s counselling department for help. Much of the efforts by
the department ought to emphasize on the need for counselling for people suffering from
mental health issues.
I) After the findings, the committee were able to understand the difficulties the students were
facing to support the individuals which were suffering from mental health issues. Majority of
the respondents stated that it was easy for them to identify an individual suffering from
poor mental health. However, the one challenge they faced was in understanding what
actions would be appropriate when they encountered a person with a mental health issue.
The campaign will be held in December as many are free during the month of December.
The survey enabled the department to have a deeper understanding of the school
population in terms of understanding for mental health issues and how it would therefore
work to improve that level of knowledge. This will work positively towards improving
understanding for mental health issues among students.
I) Students have recommended that we could invite an ECG counsellor to give a short talk
about mental health issues and the ways to solve them. The ECG counsellor certainly has
depth on issues of mental health. The counsellor should provide suggestions on various
actions that students can take to help their colleagues suffering from mental health issues.
This will go a long way in enabling them to achieve the desired level of stability especially
considering that they study. It is necessary that the counsellor suggests workable methods
that will help solve challenges that arise as a result of mental health and the most suitable
ways to cope with such.
