Graffiti is an art that not only expresses culture but also communicates to the people in the
society about various issues in society. It is a form of art that should be appreciated as opposed to
being blamed. One main reason why the graffiti artists are supposed to be appreciated just like
the other artists is that it requires the same amount of creativity that the other forms of art require
to be developed and showcased to various audiences ("Graffiti is art, not vandalism," 2018).
Most people who term Graffiti as illegal do not have a good reason for believing so rather they
have to make automatically jump into conclusion that it is illegal. Dermot Mac Cormack, the
chair of Temple’s Graphic Arts and Design department noted that graffiti is a valid artwork in its
own right and that people need to look at it from a different perspective as a way of making sure
that it is useful to the people who come up with the art and the audience that can access it. He
noted that graffiti is a playful, adventurous and aesthetically pleasing piece of art ("Graffiti is art,
not vandalism," 2018).
Experts can use the Graffiti as a source of information to understand the culture and the way of
life of the people that live in the place where the piece of art has been inscribed. For instance, the
graffiti on the walls of the Pyramids of Giza reveals that the servants in the era of the Pharaohs
enjoyed to work for their kings and they were nor forced to do so. The existence of legitimate art
in cities and various areas is an important way of enabling people to express themselves.
However, it should not be used to undermine Graffiti because the latter is an art in its way that is
supposed to be improved ("Graffiti is art, not vandalism," 2018).
Before discrediting graffiti, it is important to understand its importance among the people who
paint it and in society as a whole. It is also important to trace it is important in society. Many
graffiti creators prefer to be called Taki 183 which is the name of the person who was the
mastermind behind the culture in New York. He was a messenger who was privileged to travel
around the world, and he wrote his name wherever he went especially in the subway stations as
well as in the outside and the inside of the subway cars ("Graffiti is art, not vandalism," 2018).
The act of writing his name wherever he wants to be made many people around the world know
him. Kids then realized that they could be famous by writing their names in the subways and
within and without the subway cars, something that led to the development of the graffiti culture
in the society. The fact that people were able to know Taki 183 through the Graffiti, it means that
it is a form of art that can be used to influence the society which calls for the government to
ensure that people are using it in the best way possible. In case there is something that is
supposed to be communicated, the government may use graffiti as a way of communicating to
the people in the society. Many campaigners use graffiti as a way of campaigning in the run for
the elections as a way of popularizing themselves. The fact that graffiti is colorful means that it is
a good way of drawing the attention of the people to something or to a given idea hence it is a
very important tool that can be used in communicating to the masses about some issues that the
people face in the society (UCL, 2019).
