I took the Value in Action test and my report revealed my strengths in the following
order from 1-24 respectively: Humour, hope, humility, kindness, creativity, bravery,
teamwork, curiosity, forgiveness, leadership, social intelligence, prudence, fairness, gratitude,
honesty, perseverance, judgement, zest, self-regulation, perspective, appreciation of beauty
ad Excellence, Love, Love of learning and Spirituality. From the report, humor, hope and
humility ranked as the best three. I was not surprised by the humility and hope part as I
consider them one of my best features. After the three, kindness, creativity, bravery team
work ranked the next four. Leadership was ranked as the tenth. I was a bit disappointed that
the tests showed I had only average leadership skills. However, it was good that I learnt about
it after taking the test.
One of the most surprising aspects from the report was the fact that love was among
the last five. It ranked poorly I do not know why, yet I consider myself a very loving person
who cares about other people. According to the tests, my affection, outward care and
expression was one of my poorest qualities However, a keen look on the report showed that it
is a true reflection of my values in action. Now that I am aware of my values and strengths I
can use them to improve myself for better outcomes. I will be able to capitalize on my
strengths of humility, hope and kindness to ensure that my downside qualities don’t affect my
overall leadership performance.
On the second test which was on the Emotional Self intelligence test from chapter
three of the Sterret (2006). For my scores, beginning with the self-awareness test I scored 20,
on the next self-confidence I got 22, 19 on empathy and self-control and tied 21 for
motivation and social competency. The tests focused on identifying an individual’s ability to

harness emotions, their awareness and the management of the emotions among other factors
from the tests then one could identify what they can do to better manage and increase their
emotional quotient. From what I have scored and what I expected there was pretty much no
difference. I had never taken any test but I was aware of most of my weaknesses and the
strengths. Having been a leader for long time I understand that when people believe you
care about them they will support the ideas that you put forth. In the same category, I also
took a leadership test. From the tests, I scored most 5 or 4 and several 3. On the tests that I
took, I was able to complete only one assessment and sent three of the assessment that
worked for me to colleagues. However, I scored lower than the expectation as I have placed
higher expectations on myself.
Passmore (2012) discussed the Develop a language of strengths and that was what I
identified with, according to my results from the test. From the tests that I took, I identified
with that category. Therefore, the best way to improve my leadership skills will be to seek
feedback. When I started taking the tests I felt am good at expressing love. However, after
taking the test, I realized that I need to improve on the communication approach and become
more expressive. While am a loving person, I realized that I do not know how to improve.
According to the Passmore (2012) discussion, I need to ensure that I improve my language.
According to Rath (2007), I should make sure that I do not hide my talents, and I
should use my talents to improve my leadership qualities. From the VIA test, I realized that
am humble, I don't give up and I have hope. I can apply all those three features accurately to
ensure that I maximize on my advantages. Now that I know my strengths, I will make sure
that I put them to work so that I can be able to realize the best results for me and my
company. Specifically, since I do not give up easily I will use that to be able to motivate

others that work with me. That way, we will all be more motivated to complete the tasks that
have been assigned to us.
The emotional tests ranked my empathy poorly. Additionally, the VIA test also
ranked me poorly in terms of caring, care for others as the came among the bottom three.
Therefore, to improve my leadership skills I will work on improving my interaction
relationship with people and be passionate. That way I will be able to show people that I care
about them and they would support my activities. From Rath (2007) to improve the
leadership one has to also serve a higher propose than themselves. From the tests taken, one
of the results found that as an individual, I seem to be more focused on myself. In that regard,
I should focus more on the goal and the team. Rather focus on the prize and constantly
remind myself why I am doing this.
Generally, from the tests, I learned what I needed to do to increase my emotional
intelligence. After the tests and identification of my weaknesses in emotional awareness
intelligence, empathy, self-confidence, social competence and self-control I was able to learn
what I can do to ensure I increase the score and consequently increase my leadership skills.
To increase my emotional intelligence, I will learn how to express the intimate emotions in
close and personal relationships, try to use proactive approach when dealing with difficult
people and reduce the negative emotions. Additionally, I will also learn how to stay cool and
manage the stress, how to express difficult emotions whenever necessary and learn how to
bounce back from adversity. It through this approaches and learning that I will be able to
learn and increase my emotional intelligence score.
Question 4 limitations
The questions have been inclusive and helpful in ensuring that we are able to
understand our strengths and weaknesses. Additionally, they showed our level of emotional

intelligence. That way we can know how to categorize ourselves and act accordingly to
improve ourselves. However, the reading materials and the quizzes missed a lot in
determining the leadership skills, emotions and strengths.
The first thing that the quizzes and the reading materials missed was the focus on the
environment. The environment implying the external factors that influence us to do what we
do. The factors about our individual actions are largely dependent on us. However, there are
external factors that move us and make us make the decisions or react to them. Specifically,
how can we act in different situations depending on our emotions, strengths and weaknesses.
While the materials have been accurate in enabling us to learn a lot about ourselves, it has
come short in helping us learn how to interact or act when faced with the external forces. For
example, one can be a great leader full of all the right qualities. However, he has a lazy team
or the team is resisting his rule. As a leader, depending on my strengths, the materials should
guide on how to react to different situations. I would like to know how to deal with all those
The tests results are very general. For example, the first tests just ranked my strengths
and the emotional test of streret (2006) only assigned a number to the emotional test.
Additionally, even after categorizing the group that one belongs to, they are still general
results. Consequently, the suggestions that are offered at the end of the tests become more
general and may be hard for an individual to apply them. To allow for ease of application or
enhanced results, the tests, categorizations and the suggestions should be more specific. That
way, one can easily pick up the suggestions and use it in his leadership styles to improve.
The activities of taking the emotional test and the Value in action tests have revealed
so much about myself. The tests have put very many things into perspective for me by

revealing some of the things I did not know about myself. In addition, they have helped,
alongside the reading materials, to identify some of the ways that I could improve my
leadership skills. From the result, I need to improve on communication, empathy and focus
more on the bigger picture. I also will have to learn how to express my emotions to enhance
my emotional awareness, harnessing and management. Finally, while the exercise surveys
have been very informative, they have had some shortcomings. The main shortcomings are
that they failed to highlight anything about external factors and different leadership
situations. However, the surveys and the questionnaires on strengths and emotional
assessments were very educative.
