Linda Sanchez was born in 1969 as the sixth born in a family of seven children to immigrant Mexican parents. She was interested in studying Bilingual Education and when she got the opportunity to study at the University of North Carolina in Berkeley, she took up an undergraduate degree in Bachelor of Arts in Spanish Literature with a concentration in Bilingual Education. This was her first degree and after some time she enrolled at the University of California in Los Angeles for her Juris Doctor and she studied successfully. Before coming to the public service she was a practicing attorney in labor law. She is married to one husband, James with whom she begot one child. The couple also has three adopted children. The Congress representative Linda Sanchez is a typical congress lady as she is a former labor lawyer and has been serving in the public since 2002
Linda Sanchez entered politics in 2000, after the census of 2000, and the 39th district was created. In the first election, she finished the first one in a six-man list. After winning the primaries of the Democratic Party she went on to win the election with a 33.5% ahead of her competitor Hector De La Tore who garnered 29% of the votes. In the general elections, she also won against the Republican by 54 to 40. 8% margin. The following year on 2004, in the primaries of the democratic party she went unopposed and went ahead to retain the seat. The following elections in 2006 she also defeated Escobar again and went on to defeat two challengers in the party primaries with 77% margin. In the general elections, she defeated James A. Andiron. In 38th district, Linda Sanchez has been representing the district since 2013. From the analysis, she is a career politician. She has stayed in the political scene for 18 years. Recently, Linda declared her interest to rise in the Leadership ranks of the Democratic Party as she made public her interests in becoming the Chief of the House Democratic Caucus
The 38th district that Linda Sanchez is represented is located in the suburban eastern side Los Angeles that is located in California. The area has a population composition of 18.9% whites, 61% of the population is Hispanics, Blacks (African Americans) 3.6 %, 14.5% Asians and 1.8% other races. The district has a number of sites in the southeastern side of Los Angeles Including Artesia, Hawaiian Gardens, Pico Rivera, Santa Fe Springs, South Elmont, La Palma, Cerritos. The district also has the incorporated areas of Avocado Heights and east, north and south Whittier. The area is faced with issues of civil rights and equality, education and student loans, environment, and energy, Immigration, housing, and health. However, the most important issues in the area are the civil rights issue. The area has 61% Hispanic, and 14.5% African Americans. The district is populated with the minority and thus the civil rights and equality is still a big issue for the minority groups in the area.
Linda Sanchez is a member of various committees both legislative and non-legislative. In the legislature, she is a member of the Select Committee on Benghazi (forming of policies, decisions and activities that contributed to the attacks of Benghazi in Libya), Ways and Means Committee, Subcommittee on Tax Policy and Subcommittee on social security. She is also a member of the subcommittee on select revenue measures.
She is also a member of the Committee on ethics as a ranking member. Her involvement in non-legislative committees is also satisfactory as she is a member of several committees, including, Congressional Hispanic caucus where she is the current chair. She also co-chairs in the Congressional and Working Families Caucus among many other committees. Being a staunch Christian, Sanchez is also a member of religious and civic groups. For example, she is a former member of the Justice for Janitors and the Labor-Congress Industrial Organizations
Mrs. Sanchez’s finances for the 2018 cycle came from diverse sectors just as they have always done. The total amount raised for her campaigns was USD 1,632,597. 57. The expenditure stands at USD 1,299,731.56 leaving her with USD 751,462 cash on hand. Her top contributor this cycle was Votesane PAC, according to OpenSecrets.org. The top industries that endorsed her were the Pharmaceuticals/Health products, insurance, Misc. issues, Health professionals and Lobbyists. The most important source funding for her campaigns was from Votesane PAC and the Blue Cross / Blue Shield. She managed to meet and surpass her fundraising goals that were adequate for her campaigns.
Linda Sanchez managed to win the election for the 38th District 2018 congressional seat by 66.9%. She managed to beat her competitor Ryan Downing who managed only 33.1% of the total votes cast. The congress representative is entrenched in the Congress seat. She has been representing the district since 2013. Given the data of her fundraising where she raised 1.6 million and spent only 1.3 million, and the margin of the vote, it’s clear that she will not be losing that seat anytime soon. She is also among the top leadership of the democratic party. It is typical for members of Congress to be entrenched in the Congress. Her winning an entrenchment is similar to her colleague Karen Bass who represent the 37th District of California.
The group that I selected is the Gun owners’ associations of America. It is a group that fights for the freedom of ownership of the guns for the Americans The group is against the strict rules strict rules and regulations of gun ownership. They want them to respects the second amendment rule that allows people to bear guns as a fundamental human right. Additionally, they are trying to differentiate from the National Rifle Association accusing them of selling out some of the gun rights. The congress representative supports the Brady campaigns to prevent the Gun violence while Gun Owners’ association feel that some of the guidelines will infringe on their second amendment rights. There rating for the congress representative is F. The F is an equivalent of a rating of 0-13%. They consider the representative an enemy as she does not support their agendas.
The congress representative has chosen the issue of civil rights. Her statements strongly suggest that she believes that everyone was created equal. She says that recently she has witnessed attempts that are geared to erode the civil rights and inhibit equality in the whole nation. She focuses that the move will affect mostly the minority and the disadvantaged group. The issue is very important to her because her 38th district has 60% population Hispanics and 14.5% African Americans who represent the minorities or disadvantaged. She cited that some of the rights that were proposed had the potential to deliberately disenfranchise low-income individuals, seniors people with disabilities and people of color. Currently, she is the lead author of the Voting Rights Advancement Act that will ensure that states with a history of voting rights violation must receive the preclearance from the national government.
Linda Sanchez political party is the Democratic Party. She has been with the party ever since she joined the political scene in 2000. Her first win in the political position was from the same party. She is a typical democrat from the issues that she supports and her positions. Most of the Democrats support the Affordable care act of 2010, support the gun restrictions and bans, was funded mostly by the pharmaceutical companies and are against the continued support of the army in Afghanistan. Democrats support increased expenditure to spark economic growth. The area of California is predominantly of democratic supporters it was therefore typical for her to win the election with that margin.
I admire and like Congress representative Linda Lopez. She is a lady that has managed to rise against all odds in a male-dominated arena and still stand tall. She has identified the issues that face her community and is not afraid to fight for the rights of her people. She has widened the opportunities for education for people who want to get ahead through hard work. My admiration comes from her achievement as she has served at the fifth-highest rank in the leadership of the Democratic party of the House as the Vice-Chair of the House Democratic Caucus. With this position, Linda became the first Latin-American to be elected to a position of leadership in the American Congress and doubled up as the highest ranking Latin-American in the U.S. House. I admire her spirit and how she manages, despite all criticism, to stand and fight for the rights of her people most of whom are minorities and vulnerable communities.
