She went to the University of Cairo for Masters studies and finally received a D. in Anthropology from the anthropology department of the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in the University of London in 1998.
The position of the professor at the Centre for Gender Studies at (SOAS) enables her to educate women on their potential in the society.
She encourages students to explore different fields of knowledge through an emphasis on research.
Al-Ali is the current president of the Association of Middle East Women’s Studies (AMEWS).
She is a member of the Feminist Review Collective and can teach people about their responsibility for gender discrimination.

Besides her academic career, the professor is a political activist and founded the Iraqi British Organization Act Together: Women’s Action for Iraq in 2000.
