Richard D. Lavoie argued that treating the children in the same way does not amount to fairness but it is the provision of the needs of each child. He explains that the children in one way are able to control the parent and the teachers despite any efforts to teach them good morals and many other things. Most children define farness as giving a total share of the same to all the children. He argues that many children look at the privileges given to the disabled children is unfair to the children. He adds the fact that it is important to teach the children on the real meaning of fairness.
He advises that the parents should ensure that all the children should receive the same number of gifts. He emphasizes the meaning of fairness and he urges the parents not to think that farness means equal. He adds that a parent is supposed to treat the children differently if he or she has to be fair. The author argues that the nurturing of the talents and gifts is one of the best way of ensuring fairness among the children that they are raising. He adds that in a family setting, some children have more needs compared to the others and the parents are supposed to handle the needs effectively as a way of improving fairness among the children.
In his view assumptions have a way of making people not to focus on the issue at hand. On the other hand it takes off the agony of having to refer everything that is concerned with the issue at hand. He talks about the fact that the assumptions have been used in the classroom and that is the old is always old and the new is new.
There are several key concepts that I understood from the video that will change my perception about fairness forever. In this case only three will be addressed which include the fact that fairness is not the same as equality. I have been confusing the two terms for a long time and I believe that the video has really contributed to my knowledge in person. As a parent, I will therefore have to treat the children fairly as opposed to using a misguided form of fairness that involves making sure that all the children are able to fulfill their potential and not to force them to be equal. The other concept that I have learnt from the video is the fact that there are children who require special needs compared to the others. I will therefore assess the special needs that such children have and deal with them accordingly to ensure that they enjoy their lives. The third concept that I have learnt is that the children are supposed to be treated fairly so that they grow up to be problem solvers in the society. I will therefore nurture them to ensure that they are able to do it.
