Introduction
I was on internship at Stemletics, which is a company that provides educational and training
solutions. It is a unique educational organization that creates a fun and encouraging
curriculum that combines STEM education with athletics. The organization has a goal of
preparing students for 21 st -century careers by equipping them with the skills that they need to
succeed. It offers curriculum offerings that are designed as turn-key packages that include all
the necessary materials that a person will need to open and implement from the first day. The
company aims at simplifying the process of learning about STEM to be much simpler to
implement. The company also offers customer support and necessary professional
development that will help in effective implementation. In a nutshell, the company was
available for all the people’s STEM needs. The organization promotes active learning and is
nationally recognized in the United States of America. The organization works hand in hand
with the educators, administrators as well as parents to create an effective curriculum that
will cover the needs of the people in the society. I worked in the human resource department,
working as a human resource assistant. I was reporting directly to the Human resource
director. My responsibilities as an intern in the department were to help in the recruitment
process, initial screening, interview packets and reporting. I was also in charge of reviewing
the personnel files to ensure that they are 100% compliant with the federal and state
requirements. I also helped in payroll data entry and using quick books and Excel. I worked
with the children and parents within the organizations, and I was able to help them in
benefitting from the services that the organization offers. My supervisor was (insert name),
and he is the (insert title of the supervisor). His email address is (insert email). I completed 32
internship hours.
I worked on various projects during my internship. One of the projects that I worked on
involved the development of the payroll and making sure that the times and hours were
matching. I also took part in the recruitment of employees, where I learnt various skills that
will enable me to get the best employees for the companies that I will work for in the future.
The recruitment project was exciting, and it made me feel honoured and trusted by the
supervisors in the organization—the other projects involved planning events.
I was involved in various tasks during the internship that was aimed at preparing me for my
careers in the future. Each morning started with a meeting on what was supposed to be done
during the day. The first task that I was given was to order equipment that was needed in the
workplace. I was also given the task of supervising the training of the employees as they
learnt more about their work via video training. I also worked with kids to ensure that all the
requirements for them to sign in were available. I also worked on the payroll, making sure
that the times and the hours match. I used QuickBooks in payroll development, and I must
admit that it was a very good experience. I also took part in the interviewing process for new
employees.
The new technical skills that I learnt during the internship include the use of HR software
such as the employee management system that allocates professional and personal data to
each employee. I leant how they update the employee management system, which is
important for my career in human resource management. I also learnt about talent
management systems and how I can use them for the benefit of the company. I also acquired
the recruitment skills during the internship which is a very important technical skill for the
human resource professionals since it helps in the recruitment of the best talent in the market
that will help the company to achieve its objectives. I also leant the required techniques with
regards to the interview of the employees in the workplace. Interviewing skills require a
person to be a good listener, should be able to evaluate information and concepts and should
be able to use verbal information to interact with the prospective employees. During the
internship, I learnt compensation and benefits management that will help me remunerate the
employees in the best way possible and ensure that the company does not undergo losses as a
result of the compensation.
The new non-technical but work-related skills that I learnt while on internship include
cognitive skills such as situation awareness and decision making and personal resource skills
such as leadership, communication, stress management and teamwork. The supervisors
would assign me some complicated tasks that required situation awareness and decision
making skills, and I was able to work on them successfully. Working with the other
employees and interacting with them helped me develop personal resource skills. Working as
a team helped in the achievement of better results which helped me develop the teamwork.
There are times when I was allowed to lead some groups to do some small tasks hence
helping me develop leadership skills. Teamwork was also helpful in stress management and
communication.
The tasks that I was given during internship included going through various applications that
the prospective employees had made with regards to various vacancies available in the
organization. The other task that I was given included seating in the interview room and
participating in the interview process. I was also given a chance to update the payroll of
some employees in the workplace to ensure that it is updated and accurate. I, therefore,
acknowledge that all the tasks that I was given matched my education and capabilities. I
understood that I have all that it takes to be an employee in the organization. It is, therefore,
important to admit that the internship was very successful.
My internship has not helped me achieve my career goals yet because such goals can only be
achieved when I have a permanent job. However, it helped me to discover some ways that I
can use to achieve the goals. For instance, I have learnt that it is important to go for
opportunities in the case where I want to be successful in the pursuit of my career goals. My
career goals include being a successful human resource manager, and that can only be
achieved when I get employed. I also have the intention of becoming a consultant, and that
will only be done when I have accumulated all the required experience.
The internship gave me important ideas on what I should study during my further studies. I
decided that I am going to study performance management and assessment in my further
studies because companies need to know what to do to get the best out of the employees. I
learnt that the success of the company is pegged on how the employees perform. Stemletics
was performing better because the management of the company did their best to manage and
assess the performance of the company. It is important to note that the working environment
is dynamic meaning that it is likely to change. It is therefore important to learn various skills
that will be used in dealing with the ever-changing environment.
Top three things that I liked about my internship included supportive co-workers, the friendly
environment and the supportive supervisors. Most of the employees that we worked within
the organization were very supportive, and they helped me in the case where I was not sure
about what to do. I remember they help me adapt to the working environment when I arrived
at the company. The supervisor was available to answer my questions in case I was not aware
of what I was supposed to do. The friendly environment that has been developed in the
company makes it have the best environment to work. We cannot ignore the fact that the
attitudes of some employees are wanting but the overall working environment is friendly to
the employees.
Some of the negative experiences included working with employees that looked down upon
me because of the fact that I was an intern. The other maddening thing was that I was not
trusted to handle some tasks because the superiors in the organization thought that I was not
able to even after showing them that I have what it takes to perform the tasks. Also, I
wouldn't say I liked the fact that I was doing a lot of work that was not being noticed, such an
experience really discouraged me as I did my best to deliver for the organization. Mangers
seem to forget that I was new to the field which made me annoyed at first, but I came to learn
that it was to my advantage. I was, therefore, able to do my best and serve the company as
well as I could.
I had put in place four objectives that I wanted to achieve during the internship. They
included understanding the roles of the human resource manager, understanding the payroll
in real life and comparing it to what we have learnt from the textbook, learning the
techniques of carrying out the recruitment interviews as well as learning the whole process of
recruitment and finding the best employees that will help the company. I must admit that all
the objectives were fulfilled, meaning that the internship was a good experience and a
success. Working closely with the human resource management and asking some of the
workmates in the workplace, I was able to know the role that the human resource manager
plays in the organization and the role that he or she has in the success or failure of the
organization. I understood how important the department is and why it needs the right person
with the necessary skills and attitudes to head it. Before the internship, I used QuickBooks as
a way of making payrolls, but the internship taught me that using the QuickBooks is one of
the most effective ways of making payroll. I learnt the importance of being extra careful in
the process of preparing the payroll to ensure that there are no errors that could cause losses
to the company. I was also able to learn the techniques that are used in conducting
recruitment interviews. I learnt from experience because there are times when I attended the
interviews, and I was allowed to ask two questions. One important lesson that I learnt with
regards to the interviews was the fact that it is important to plan prior to the interview so as to
decide on the people who will ask questions. All the recruitment activities that I participated
in as I worked in the organization gave me some skills on how I could get the best employees
for a given company.
