The paper by Frantzen (1993) addresses the welfare of the women in the society and the work of
feminist to champion for the recognition of the women in the society. The thesis of the paper is
that gender serves both as an innovative and traditional scholarship. The concept is established
through the analysis of some examples of the manly man and the manly woman and striking a
balance between the new gender anxieties that the old defensiveness has prompted among the
traditionalists. The author supports his thesis by looking at what the feminists view the issues of
gender. Also addresses the roles that each gender is supposed to perform in the society.
The author opens the arguments by noting the fact that the criticism by the feminists has put the
traditionalists on the defensive. He also gives the meaning of a true traditionalist in the society
saying that being a traditionalist means being anxious about innovation. Frantzen notes that
gender has replaced. He gives the advantage of using the term garner to define the people in the
society. He states that gender can be used to explain why some men are stronger than the other
and the other physical imbalances in the lives of the people that sex cannot account for. Frantzen
adds that the feminists are always opposed to the idea of the fact that gender as a term reveals the
inadequacy that shows how the physicality of men is greater than that of the women. The paper
shows several ways in which the term gender has been used to give other meanings that sex was
not able to hence recommend it as the best term that can be used to refer to the men and women
in the society.
The style which the writer uses to write the article is simple and easy to understand. He also
gives simple and interesting illustrations that are pleasing to the readers of the paper. The
message, therefore, comes out clearly. The paper lacks an abstract, which compels the reader to
go through it to understand the contents of it. The size of the article seems daunting, but the
contents in it make it worth. Each paragraph contains the information that is supposed to be dealt
with to the benefit of the society. I would recommend various readers to the article if they want
to get an understanding of the weaknesses that the female gender faces and what can be done to
deal with it in the society. Overall, the topic was well handled in the whole paper, and the ideas
were well arranged in such a way that they make the process of reading to be easier and
interesting. I have also learnt some writing skills that I will use in my future writing.
