Among the young people, homelessness is an issue of most significant concern in the
society today. It is a global concern. Youths who are homeless, in most cases called
“unaccompanied youths” are persons who have no parental foster or institutional care. It is
estimated that approximately 1.3 million young people are homeless and they find homage in
streets which are unsupervised, buildings which are abandoned or with people who are not
related to them in some way (Varney). Youths who are homeless are prone to risks of physical
abuse, exploitation of sexually, mental disabilities, abuse of substances and death. Studies
indicate that approximately 5,000 youths who are not accompanied die annually due to suicide,
illness or assault. There are some common reasons why children become homeless or run away.
These problems are; Family problems such as an inability of the family to provide basic needs;
Transitions from foster care and other public systems and economic issues.
The results of homelessness are adverse and cannot be underestimated. It is because of
this that Stand up for Kids – San Diego is set up to handle the issue of homelessness for the kids
to reduce the effects that result from such movements (Varney). This paper aims at exploring the
solutions that the San Diego organization is bringing on board and the various ways in which it
has achieved its objectives.
Stand Up For Kids – San Diego was opened in the year 1990 on the chapter of Stand Up
For Kids. This chapter works on four major core programs which are; Outreach Drop-In Center,
Street Outreach, Mentoring and Apartment Support. The primary concern of this organization is
that kids who are homeless are the immediate target of human traffickers, those who act
pornography and gangs.
These kids are forced to put up with horrors some of which are unimaginable only to
survive. The primary focus of this organization is to prevent and provide resources and services
to help the youths who are homeless on the journey to achieve sufficient adulthood (Thal). The
organization operates on two main programs which are Send A-Kid Home Program where it
reunites the kid to a responsible family member who is in a position to provide safety and
security for the kid. The other program is known as Snack & Shower Program which avails
services to kids who are living inside the cars.
The San Diego family has objectives with the kids who camp there, and it gives the more
reasons why it is appropriate for this problem. The first objective that the organization has is to
enable the kids to try a new thing. It pushes the kids out of their comfort zones and convinces
them that they can do great things. The second objective is to develop social skills in the kids.
This organization aims at teaching the kids how to communicate and work together and to
become team leaders, thus eliminating the feeling of neglect. The organization also aims at
making the kids learn to face challenges and to know the value of hard work (Thal). This follows
from the fact that these kids feel safe in the camp and therefore they dare to take risks which are
Another aim of this organization is to help the kids to build character and to foster their
independence. At this organization, these kids learn the responsibility they have of making their
own decisions. The primary goal of any of such institutions is to make sure that the children have
some time to focus on their lives. This organization is, therefore, making many efforts to achieve
Stand Up For Kids – San Diego is an organization which has its origin in the United
States, and it was set up with the intention of providing homage to the homeless kids in the
United States. The organizations offer service to youths who are not accompanied and young
parents who have their children until these people obtain twenty-five years. The mission of this
organization is to bring to an end the cycle of youth homelessness which is ongoing (Thal). This
organization is proud of the fact that the volunteer teams have built trust and have become the
consistent resource to ensure stability and also help the youth who have been ignored by the
The organization works hard to bring to an end the cycle of youth homelessness by
identifying and engaging the youths who are homeless and are at risk. The kids are then
connected to a variety of programs which are without the community supports so that they can
address their needs. The youths are guided by the blueprints to success in outcomes that are
healthy and sustainable. At all stages in the development process of the kid, this organization
strives to build relationships that are healthy and trust so that they can promote safety, and fight
for the rights of the youth.
There are some key reasons which make this organization unique from other
organizations. The first reason is that this organization has been trusted since the year 1990 and
they are now approaching their third decade (Thal). The second reason is that they have
developed several other programs so that they respond to the various needs of the community.
They also build services in consultation with the local and the national experts. The third reason
for the uniqueness of this group is that they don’t just work for the minors, but they work hand in
hand with the youth until they become of the age of 25. This organization recognizes that there
are services which have been developed and are appropriate to serve the young persons who are
above eighteen years in the homeless system of the adults. So this organization does not turn
their back on people when they attain an age where the society considers them as adults.
This organization equally does not have barriers to gaining access to the care, and they
recognize that sometimes, it is significantly difficult for the youths to accept that they are in need
of help. The organization does not turn these youths away irrespective of the situations they have
been through at any particular time. Stand Up For Kids – San Diego celebrates the differences
and embraces the child without putting into consideration the race, ancestry, national origin, sex,
expression, a status of relationships, family roles, disability, political affiliation or even
The youth in this organization tells them the most important things and their expectation
from the organization. The volunteers in this organization are adequately trained and they are
thoroughly screened before they can start operations in this organization (Thal). Lastly, the
donations which this organization distributes to the kids come from individuals or organizations
that have made commitments to partner with this organization to carry out their operations in the
best way possible.
This organization is determined to solve a significant problem in the society today, which
is homelessness of the youths. Through the partnerships and the donations offered by the
volunteers, this organization is promising to make more significant achievements in the future.
As opposed to many other charity firms, this organization depends on individuals who share in
the same vision and are willing to support where necessary and therefore as long as such people
are still in existence, the organization is likely to continue with its operations.
This organization is meeting much of its objectives in the best way possible and to the
best of their ability. The only limitations that are there are the number of volunteers and well-
wishers (Varney). The organization, therefore, needs to create awareness effectively and
communicate their needs to individuals with willing hearts. The three main pillars of this
organization through which they foster their changes are; to engage, connect and support the
youths. By building on these pillars, the organization competently achieves its objectives.
