The author notes that art has nothing to do with intellectual hence he is against it being in the
university. He notes that the best place where art should be practiced is in the gutters. He notes that
the best way to learn art is not to only talk about it rather it should involve doing it. He adds that the
reason why he gets into words is because there is no other way that he can communicate. According to
the author, if we are unable to battle the world around us then there is need to descend to it. He says
that there is need to use words as a way of putting the people that love them to their place.
The author attacks the seven crutches of architecture noting that the people with crutches rejoice that
they are walking and as a result laugh at the people who are walking on two legs. The crutches that the
author attacks include the crutch of history, the crutch of pretty drawings, crutch of utility, crutch of
comfort, the crutch of cheapness, the crutch of serving the clients and the crutch of structure. The
crutch of history involves the reliance to the books. The crutch of pretty drawings relies on the beauty of
the buildings that are being made. The crutch of utility focuses on the usefulness, the crutch of comfort
refers to ensuring that the comfort of the people is taken into account. The crutch of cheapness comes
in the wake of the financial difficulties and the lower budges of the builders. The crutch of serving clients
is going as per what the clients need and in so doing an architect and the crutch of srucure.
The author then deliberates on what is supposed to be done as a way of hanging the crutches and
allowing architecture to stand on its own. The author notes that he is a firm believer of history. He notes
the importance of going back to the traditional way of architecture as a good way of hanging the
crutches and ensuring that the architecture is improved in the best way possible. According to the
author, it is better to focus on the foundations that have been placed in the field of literature. He adds
that he is not a revolution enthusiast meaning that that he still believed in the old ways of doing things.
How will architecture be affected by the removal of the so called the crutches of architecture?
The removal of the crutches may affect the field of architecture negatively. They are the support
systems that enable the architects to succeed in their tasks. However, if the architects revert to old ways
they are able to prosper. One thing to note is that any system must have a support system and
architecture is not an exception. Removal of the crutches without making sure that architecture is able
to stand on its own is disadvantageous. Research is therefore required to improve architecture and
ensure that all is well for the benefit of the society as a whole. It may turn out that the so called crutches
are important in the field of architecture as a whole. Architecture therefore relies on the other fields.
