In the recent past, the unmanned aerial vehicles, otherwise known as drones, have been approved to be used in an original business sector which is called ‘the last mile delivery.’ In their innovative idea, they are installed along with trucks to transport varied products to clients, in that way heightening the service providence and minimising the cost of transportation. The innovation approach has led to the emergence of traveling sales man problem (TSP) which has been named as TSP with drone (TSPD). An alternative to this problem as studied by Tay, Erfmeier & Kalwij, (2018) is to capitalize on giving solutions of reducing the time frames in which the truck and the drone can end the work.
Drones have very many advantages and that is the reason it received anonymous support to be used for transport at its innovation. Generally, they are not as expensive in comparison with trucks, meaning they are economical that makes it easy to embrace especially in business where profit is factor that require that money is spent cautiously in all other factors. The fact that the drones accomplish its work independently makes its labor cheaper (Tay, Erfmeier & Kalwij, 2018). This as well helps the business people in minimising the money spent on labor so as to realize better profits. Another importance of drones is that they are much faster compered to trucks. This is because, they are not limited with infrastructure or the conditions of the road, that is to say, they are made in a way that they can face the hindrances making them reach their destinations faster. This makes it the best mode for transportation during emergency situations, they are actually capable of saving lives. In precarious situations, drones can be used to transport enough water, medicinal supplies, and food among other goods in bad terrains.
Due to these impeccable capabilities, many organizations have adopted the use of drones. The Amazon organization in 2013 publicized its interest by announcing of ‘prime air’ which is the service that uses drones in transportation of Amazon products to their clients in varied regions. In the same year, German logistics company Deutsche Post also started using drones to transport medicine to the island called Juist which is located in the North Sea. Google as well discovered in the same year, a project wing that was to produce bigger drones in comparison to the ones that were used by Amazon and Parcelcopter (Dorin, 2019). The United Arab Emirates in 2014 announced their interest in the use of drones to transport government documents such as, Identification Cards and permits to different regions in the country.
There are extensive and copious innovations and developments on drones and its uses that have made it practicable for many companies to use it in transportation of a wide range of goods. In the last 20 years for instance, the cost of carbon fibre manufacturing has witnessed a tremendous decrease of $25 per kilogram down to $10 per kilogram, therefore, enhancing the creation of much stronger and lighter weight airframes. Another company that has done better is, the lithium polar batteries, having their comparatively densities of energy that are high, they have realized an upgraded number of flights of UAVs that is in comparative to the substitute technologies of nickel-metal hydrate ad nickel-cadmium (Irimia et al., 2019). Drones are made in such a way that they make use of GPS technologies to discover locations, plus they are as well using DGPS and techniques of localization, this enhances their accuracy of locating places. They are able to avoid hurdles or obstacles through varied techniques, for instance image processing and LIDAR (Bozveliev, Sotirov & Videv, 2019). There are procedures of architecture and protocols that have as well been established in order to empower drones to custom ad-hoc networks and wireless communication with different bodies.
Although, there is a substantial exertion that has been put in the improvement of the drone conveyance technologies, the challenges facing drone technologies, for instance the capacity carried with drones and the ranges of flight, have greatly been deserted in assessment. The problem of the flying sidekick salesman is elucidation to allow trucks to install drones as well, but the problem is, the trucks only depend on a convoy of trucks and drones to create deliveries. The green VRPs looks good as it can apply a battery-powered vehicle, the hindrance though, is the fact that it seems to be made in a way premeditated with trucks or otherwise, other big capacity vehicles. Another problem is that drones are have very small capacities in comparison to trucks, having restricted times of flight, that means the much they can carry is only a little number per route (Karthik, 2019). The GVRP is not permitted to make numerous trips to the depot, so as the small capacity of the drone, as well as the decrease of maximum time of travel, all these can be recompensed probably by purchasing more drones even if they might be used be reused. The drone delivery problems can therefore be solved by enhancing multi-trips recompense for the limited carrying capacity of each one’s carrying capacity and by using them again when probable.
In essence drones have expanded to quite a number of sectors, for instance in the military, the field of agriculture, in surveillance, in the area of science and business and aerial photography among many other fields. To begin with, the agricultural sector has expanded tremendously since the innovation of drones. The drones have in them an installation of a remote sensing technology which detects the rate at which the crop grows, discovers if there is a disease that has attacked the crops, also checks on the best conditions of climate for a particular crop among many more (Scharf, 2018). It also helps with the spraying of crops with pesticides or insecticides, in a much faster and efficient way. This has helped in the reduction of environmental pollution with these harmful chemicals emitted pesticides or rather insecticides.
More interestingly, there are counties that have developed this technology in order to make their citizens safe. This is through, the use of drones in emergencies such as fire-fighting to save the people who are in the inferno (Karthik, 2019). This technology is helpful to the police force as well, as it can easily track down suspects by looking at their behaviour and identities. The traffic is another sector that has also gotten overwhelming support from the drone technology. Even the lost can easily be traced and rescued by use of this technology.
The advent of drones has brought about a major development and efficiency in the military services. Due to the fact that the drones are very small in size, they can always penetrate very confined spaces or territories. Terrorism threats is another area that can easily be noticed with the use of the drone technology. The military can use these drones in the bombing scenarios. As the military hide outs can be identified and demolished without putting the soldiers in any danger. In the nations that are developed, the technology of drones has also been used in warfare (Irimia et al., 2019). These gargets are able to be put in a continuous use of up to sixteen hours. Therefore, investigations on suspected criminals can be effectively carried out without any interruptions.
In the field of journalism, drones have comprehensively made the work simpler. Many are the films particularly in Hollywood which have enjoyed their shootings with the help of drones. This is because, they easily reach heights or places which can never be accessed whatsoever by ordinary beings. In weather forecasting, this technology has assisted with determining the climatic changes of different places across the globe. These machines are even able to detect any calamities such as floods or heightened heat that can cause problems to mankind. In archaeology, the scientists have also advanced through the use of these technologies. They no longer spend days or years excavating areas or rather checking the landscapes of varied places. The drones easily find the information easier than any human can (Irimia et al., 2019).
Ultimately, the economy growth in this century is out rightly connected to the invention of the drone technology. For a better country, the safety of the people, the thriving agricultural sector, the line of commercial activities and many other fields can achieve more with the application of these drones. There is research still on about the usage this technology in all other fields, if this is completed, then it will be one gadget that can solve all of the humanitarian problems.
