Counseling is a collaborative effort between the counselor and the client in an attempt to find solutions to the psychological problems that the latter is going through. People face many challenges and at times they are unable to handle the burden alone. We are there to help such people to solve the problems and also to understand that life has to go on despite the issues and the problems that they are facing. As a counselor, my work is to my work is to help the client in the identification of the goals as well as potential solutions to the problems that cause emotional turmoil. We also help strengthen self-esteem and ensuring that the clients have optimal mental health, help them promote behavioral change and improve the communication and coping skills. All the services are geared at restoring the dignity and the meaning of life.
Chapter 2: Ethics in counseling
Counselling has several ethical issues and concerns just like the other careers. The counsellors are expected to be malleable to a variety of clients’ personality traits to ensure that the counselor-client relationship is established. The ethical guidelines, the code of practice as well as the counselling micro-skills play an important role in supporting the decision making process of the counselor. In the case where an individual crosses the ethical line, it takes his career down. There are some cases when a counselor nay faces an ethical dilemma. Such situations are tricky because any decision that the individual takes has its fair share of consequences. A good example is where a client who has killed someone comes to the counselor for advice, the counselor will be caught between being a good citizen and report the wrongdoing or be a good counselor and keep it a secret. In this case not reporting to the authorities is an offense and reporting is a violation of the counselors’ code of conduct since the counselors are supposed to safely keep the secrets that the people give them.
